CCDTR investigators present at the 9th Annual Chicago Diabetes Day, Dr. Baig wins an award

May 19, 2014 – The 9th Annual Chicago Diabetes Day took place this past Saturday, May 17th at the University of Chicago. In the morning, CCDTR investigator Neda Laiteerapong gave a talk entitled “Introduction to Diabetes” to a group of boy scouts who attended the research day to learn about the latest in diabetes research in Chicago.

In the afternoon, Dr. Laiteerapong and CCDTR investigator Dr. Arshiya Baig presented posters of their research during the poster presentation session. Dr. Baig won an award for one of the eight best posters presented during the session for her poster entitled ‘“Local Patients, Local Stories:” A Latino Cultural Competency Training Program for Healthcare Providers and Staff.’ Congratulations Dr. Baig!

2014 Health Disparities and Social Justice Conference
DePaul University

The Picture Good Health Team will join Taller de José, their partnering social service agency in Little Village, in leading a workshop at the 2014 Health Disparities and Social Justice Conference. The focus of the conference this year is Latino health. Taller de José will be presenting their model of accompaniment and will describe how it is similar to but potentially a more holistic approach than the patient navigator model to reducing health disparities. Amanda Benitez, project manager of Dr. Arshiya Baig’s Picture Good Health program and the Local Patients, Local Stories provider training program, will discuss our Center’s partnership with Taller de José in addressing diabetes disparities among Latinos in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago through these two programs.
