Childhood Obesity and Diabetes

Childhood obesity has risen significantly in recent decades, increasing the health risks for youth and young adults. CCDTR investigators are studying ways to reduce obesity and prevent type 2 diabetes in youth. We have implemented and evaluated community-based, family-oriented interventions in partnership with schools, community health centers and other community-based organizations in and around the South Side of Chicago.

Power-Up After-School Collaborative Child and Family Obesity Prevention Program

Power-Up is a weekly curriculum for children in the after-school program. Families are given weekly activities to complete at home to reinforce the lesson and parents are apprised of after-school activities by cellphone texts to keep them engaged in healthy nutrition and physical activities.
