POWER UP ALL STARS: “Until Next Season…”

October 24, 2014 – A picture speaks volumes and it was all smiles for a great end to a perfect 2014 Power Up All Stars Season with the Chicago White Sox. Again, this season, we challenged the growing epidemic of childhood obesity by promoting the importance of nutrition and physical activity at U.S. Cellular Park as well as in the communities highly affected by this disparity. Our spotlight school for this season was CPS Langford Academy located in the Englewood area of the city of Chicago. This is an area plagued by poverty, social inequality, and food deserts. Langford’s principal, Dr. Lynn McGinnis-Garner said, “We are thankful for the Power Up Program because it is just something our kids would not have had the opportunity to participate in.” Dr. Garner and her team were thrilled to partner with this program for their students which additionally promoted baseball, a sports activity highlighted this summer by Chicago’s own division winners, the Jackie Robinson Baseball Team. We would like to thank the Chicago White Sox/MLB and the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital for their valued alliance in combating childhood obesity. ~Althera M. Steenes, Project Manager for the Power Up Program
